Equity / Diversity Policies
MANDATE

The mandate of the Equity/Diversity Committee is set out in Rule 136 as follows:

136.   The Equity/Diversity Committee shall:

(a)        review the Report of the Joint Committee on Gender Discrimination (1992) and make recommendations to the Benchers regarding its adoption in whole or in part;

(b)        devise and recommend to the Benchers policies for the membership on gender equity matters pertaining to the profession including, inter alia:

(i) Gender discrimination;

(ii) Sexual harassment;

(iii) Alternative work arrangements and parental leave;

(iv) Gender neutral language;

(v) Any other matters referred to the Committee;

(c)        review The Legal Profession Act, 1990; The Rules of the Law Society of Saskatchewan; and The Code of Profession Conduct as they relate to gender equity issues and recommend amendments as may be necessary.

One of the recommendations of the Joint Committee was that a standing committee of the Benchers be formed.  The Committee was first struck in early 1993 and the Courts, the College of Law, and the Department of Justice were invited to send representatives to the Committee.
