Queen's Counsel Nominations Posted August 23, 2010 The designation of Queen’s Counsel is made by the Minister of Justice through a selection process that includes consultation with the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the Canadian Bar Association and the Courts.
The selection of the Law Society’s nominees for the designation of Queen’s Counsel will be based upon the following criteria:
As prerequisite qualifications:
1. Demonstrated superior legal ability;
2. Proof of good character and integrity;
3. No person shall be appointed who has not been entitled during ten years to practise in the superior courts of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland or of any province of Canada or of the Northwest Territories or for a portion of such period in one and for the remaining portion of such period in another or others of the said courts;
As further qualifications, the following criteria, each of equal weight:
4. Contributions as a legal professional to the community;
5. Contributions to the community generally; and
6. Contributions to the legal profession.
The Law Society will also, in its recommendations, take into account considerations of gender, diversity and geography.
The deadline for nominations is November 2nd, 2010.

Willy Hodgson Award is intended to recognize individuals or organizations who exemplify integrity, leadership and character, and have made or are making outstanding contributions to advancing equity and diversity in legal education, the legal profession and/or the administration of justice in Saskatchewan or in Canada.
NNominations are now open for the 2010 award which will be presented in 2011. Nomination forms and more information can be located on the website. The deadline for nominations is November 26, 2010.
Law Society Appointee to the Law Foundation Posted August 17, 2010
The Law Society of Saskatchewan may appoint five members to the Law Foundation. There is currently a vacancy for one Law Society appointee. We are seeking volunteers from the membership, including Benchers and former Benchers, for consideration in the appointment process.
The Law Foundation is funded from the interest earned on lawyers’ trust accounts. Pursuant to section 76 of The Legal Profession Act, 1990, the Foundation provides grants for the following charitable objectives:
- Legal education
- Legal research
- Legal aid
- Law libraries; and
- Law reform
Each appointment is for a two year term and appointees may serve 3 two-year terms. The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan meets four times annually, usually in Regina and Saskatoon.
Applicants must be a member in good standing with the Law Society. Experience in financial management would be an asset.
Please send your expression of interest, along with practice information and a current curriculum vitae to the Law Society at reception@lawsociety.sk.ca on or before August 20, 2010.

Applications to the Law Society are reviewed by the Queen’s Counsel selection Committee which consists of the following:
- Past President of the Law Society
- A current Bencher of the Law Society
- A public representative appointed to the Law Society
- A member of the Law Society

Practitioner Staff Appeals Tribunal Posted July 27, 2010 The Practitioner Staff Appeals Tribunal hears appeals from medical practitioners who have been aggrieved by decision of a Regional Health Authority. The Law Society is entitled to recommend 6 candidates to the Minister of Health. The Minister may appoint two of the candidates to a three year term on the Tribunal. The ideal candidate will have experience in administrative law, appearing both on and before Tribunals. Experience in health law would be an asset.
Interested members should consult the Practitioner Staff Appeal Regulations and direct any enquiries to David Smith, Registrar of the Tribunal, at 787-0297.

Real Estate Committee Posted March 10, 2010
The Law Society of Saskatchewan regulates the legal profession in the public interest. The Real Estate Committee promotes uniform and competent practices among real estate lawyers. The Law Society is seeking applications for the Real Estate Committee. Applicants should have substantial practice experience in real estate. It is expected that attendance at most meetings would be via telephone conference.

Canadian Cemtre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) Posted March 8, 2010 CPLED is a non-profit corporation that administers the Bar Admission Course for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. The Law Society is looking for one representative to serve on the Board of Directors. There are usually 3 to 4 meetings each year, with the majority scheduled via telephone conference.
The ideal candidate will be a member of the Law Society in good standing with the following attributes:
- experience with articling students and the articling program
- participation in the Bar Course
- interest and experience in professional education
- interest and experience in web-based training

CPD Program Committee The Law Society of Saskatchewan is committed to providing continuing professional development opportunities to the profession. The CPD Planning Committee will assist the Director of Education in the selection of subject matter and the organization and delivery of continuing professional development programming.
The Law Society is seeking applications for the CPD Planning Committee. Selection for the Committee should be representative of the profession including diversity in practice, geographic location, gender etc. An interest or experience in education would also be an asset.

Saskatoon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Saskatoon SPCA is currently looking for volunteers to serve on the board of directors. AGM is in April 2010 with membership required for a period of at least 60 days prior to board nominations. The organization is financially strong and we are looking for forward thinkers wanting to help plan and move the organization into the future. A strong legal, financial, HR, business or marketing background is preferred, no previous board experience required. The board is also looking for a Corporate Secretary with board governance experience. The Saskatoon SPCA has monthly board and sub-committee meetings.

E.M. Culliton Scholarship Endowment As a tribute to the former Chief Justice E. M. Culliton, an endowment was established by The Law Society of Saskatchewan to provide that in perpetuity a special scholarship is to be awarded for the pursuit of post-graduate studies in criminal law. The value of the scholarship to be awarded in 2010 has not yet been finally determined, but the maximum amount available is expected to be $10,000. Up to two scholarships may be awarded in any one year. The deadline date for receipt of applications is May 7th, 2010 and a decision will be made by the end of June, 2010.
Saskatchewan Legal Aid Representatives Since 1974, the Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission has provided legal services to persons and organizations for criminal and civil matters where those persons and organizations are financially unable to secure these services from their own resources. The Legal Aid Act provides for the appointment of 10 members – two of which are appointed by the Law Society.
The Law Society is looking for two representatives to serve on the Saskatchewan Legal Aid Commission. Please submit applications to llynchuk@lawsociety.sk.ca.

Queen's Bench Rules Amendments Committee Representatives A standing committee of lawyers is being created for the purpose of consultation on ongoing rule revisions to the Court of Queen’s Bench Rules. The Law Society of Saskatchewan is seeking two qualified candidates to serve as representatives on the committee. The selection criteria will be based primarily on lawyers who are knowledgeable and experienced in civil litigation and who have an interest in improving the administration of justice for members of the public, particularly regarding rules of court that reflect not only the interests of the court or lawyers, but also the interests of the public.

Pro Bono Service Award In recognition of the contribution of lawyers in Saskatchewan to supporting access to justice for persons of limited means, Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan and the Law Society of Saskatchewan have established an annual award to recognize outstanding pro bono service. The Award will be presented annually during the Lawyer’s Charity Gala, sponsored by The Law Society of Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. Deadline for nominations is December 31.

2008 Canadian Pro Bono Awards Criteria & Nominations July 24, 2008 Call for nominations for awards honouring individuals, groups, or organizations from anywhere in Canada for their outstanding pro bono contributions in the following three categories:

2. An individual actively involved in pro bono
3. A pro bono program serving the community
Awards will be presented at a Dinner and Awards Ceremony on September 18, 2008 as part of the 2008 National Pro Bono Conference in Vancouver (www.probonoconference.ca).

Allan Blair Cancer Centre March 14, 2008 The Allan Blair Cancer Centre (ABCC) is currently looking for two lawyers to sit on their Ethics Review Board. The primary purpose of this board is to review and approve the clinical research studies for the Cancer Agency. The Allan Blair Cancer Centre is affiliated with four major study groups – the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (US – National Institute of Health), the Children’s Oncology Group and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group – and most ABCC studies involve participation in large multi-institutional trials with well established protocols and consent procedures.
The committee meets once per month (second Thursday) from 1200 – 1315 hours at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre (Pasqua Hospital) in Regina. This is a voluntary position (lunch provided). The work is not onerous but would be of interest to a lawyer with an interest in Health Law, anyone interested in learning more about cancer care or simply wishing to make a contribution to the Cancer care in our community.
