University of Saskatchewan Senate

Volunteer for University of
Saskatchewan Senate
The Law Society of Saskatchewan is
one of several professional groups which is represented on the
University of Saskatchewan Senate. Some of the other
professions on the University of Saskatchewan Senate include
chartered accountants, architects, dentists, doctors, pharmacists,
registered nurses and teachers.
The University of Saskatchewan
Senate makes bylaws for disciplining students for other than
academic dishonesty; provides for awarding honourary degrees; deals
with proposals for establishing colleges, schools or departments;
deals with proposals for affiliated educational institutions; and
makes recommendations to the University Board of Governors on
matters or things the Senate considers necessary to promote the
interests of the University.
The Law Society of Saskatchewan is
seeking a volunteer to serve as its representative on the
University of Saskatchewan Senate. The term is for a period
of 3 years commencing July 1st, 2013. Members interested in
serving as the Law Society representative on the University of
Saskatchewan Senate should send notice to llynchuk@lawsociety.sk.ca,
along with a resumé and reasons for applying by June 28, 2013.
Queen's Counsel Selection Committee 2013

The Law Society of Saskatchewan is
inviting applications for appointment to the Queen's Counsel
Selection Committee.
The designation of Queen's Counsel
is made by the Minister of Justice through a selection process that
includes consultation with the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the
Canadian Bar Association and the Courts.
Applications to the Law Society are
reviewed by the Queen's Counsel selection Committee which consists
of the following:
- Past President of the Law Society
- A current Bencher of the Law Society
- A public representative appointed to the Law Society
- A member of the Law Society
Anyone interested in participating on this committee should
forward an expression of interest to Thomas Schonhoffer, Q.C. by
May 23, 2013. Please submit your information to his assistant

Law Foundation Appointee
October 23, 2012
The Law Society of Saskatchewan may
appoint five members to the Law Foundation. There is
currently a vacancy for two Law Society appointees. We are
seeking volunteers from the membership, including Benchers and
former Benchers, for consideration in the appointment process.
The Law Foundation is funded from
the interest earned on lawyers' trust accounts. Pursuant to
section 76 of The Legal Profession Act, 1990, the Foundation
provides grants for the following charitable objectives:
- Legal education
- Legal research
- Legal aid
- Law libraries; and
- Law reform
Each appointment is for a two year term and appointees may serve 3
two-year terms. The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan meets four
times annually, usually in Regina and Saskatoon.
Applicants must be a member in good
standing with the Law Society. Experience in financial
management would be an asset.

Federation of Law Societies of Canada
September 11, 2012
Canada's 14 provincial and
territorial Law Societies govern over 100,000 lawyers and 4,000
Quebec notaries in the public interest. The Federation of Law
Societies of Canada is their national coordinating body. The
Federation leads in the development of high national standards of
regulation to ensure that all Canadians are served by a competent,
honourable and independent legal profession. More information

The Law Society of Saskatchewan has
an opening for a Council member to serve for a two-year term and
who may also be eligible for reappointment for up to six years.
The ideal candidate will have
sufficient recent and relevant professional regulation experience
to provide national leadership, as well as the time and a sincere
commitment to remain current on issues of the Law Society of
Saskatchewan. The expectations for the Council member are as
follows:
- Attend all FLSC Council meetings (currently 3 in person and 1
telephone meeting per year).
- Report after each meeting to the Law Society of Saskatchewan
(LSS) Benchers, and where appropriate, before that time, to the
Executive Committee or the President, Vice-President and the
Executive Director.
- Provide supporting documentation received from the FLSC to the
LSS as appropriate, to ensure that the LSS is fully informed about
national initiatives and the FLSC agenda.
- Attend LSS Bencher meetings to facilitate this obligation and
answer questions.
- Obtain instructions from Saskatchewan, where necessary,
regarding matters on the FLSC agenda, which instructions may come
from the President in consultation with the Vice-President and the
Executive Director, or the Executive Committee or the
Benchers. Bencher approval will generally be obtained for
matters touching on regulatory issues such as rule or policy
changes and financial commitments.
- Remain fully informed about the work of the LSS, and in
particular, the Benchers' priorities and agenda.
- Where appropriate, use such information to inform the work of
the Council and manage Council's expectations regarding
Saskatchewan's ability to deal with FLSC agenda items.
- As appropriate, convey Saskatchewan's desire for the FLSC to
achieve certain objectives.
- Facilitate an exchange of information between Saskatchewan and
other Law Societies on matters of common interest.
- Participate fully as a committee member on whatever
committee(s) the Council representative is invited to participate
on a national level.

Practitioner Staff Appeals Tribunal
August 20, 2012
The Practitioner Staff Appeals
Tribunal hears appeals from medical practitioners who have been
aggrieved by decision of a Regional Health Authority. The Law
Society is entitled to recommend 6 candidates to the Minister of
Health. The Minister may appoint two of the candidates to a
three year term on the Tribunal.
The ideal candidate will have
experience in administrative law, appearing both on and before
Tribunals. Experience in health law would be an asset.

the Practitioner Staff Appeal Regulations and direct any enquiries
to David Smith, Registrar of the Tribunal, at 787-0297.

Nomination Form
The designation of Queen's Counsel
is made by the Minister of Justice through a selection process that
includes consultation with the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the
Canadian Bar Association and the Courts.
The selection of the Law Society's
nominees for the designation of Queen's Counsel will be based upon
the following criteria:
- As prerequisite qualifications:
- Demonstrated superior legal ability;
- Proof of good character and integrity;
No person shall be appointed who has not been entitled during ten
years to practise in the superior courts of the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Ireland or of any province of Canada or of the
Northwest Territories or for a portion of such period in one and
for the remaining portion of such period in another or others of
the said courts;
As further qualifications, the
following criteria, each of equal weight:
- Contributions as a legal professional to the community;
- Contributions to the community generally; and
- Contributions to the legal profession.
The Law Society will also, in its recommendations, take into
account considerations of gender, diversity and geography.
The deadline for nominations is
October 3, 2012.
C. Willy Hodgson Award 2012
August 16, 2012
The C. Willy Hodgson Award is
intended to recognize individuals or organizations who exemplify
integrity, leadership and character, and have made or are making
outstanding contributions to advancing equity and diversity in
legal education, the legal profession and/or the administration of
justice in Saskatchewan or in Canada.
Nominations are now open for the
2012 award which will be presented in 2013. Nomination forms
and more information can be located here. The deadline
for nominations is November 23, 2012.

Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association Board
May 7, 2012
Professional liability insurance for
Saskatchewan lawyers is provided through a reciprocal insurance
exchange known as Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association
(CLIA). The Law Society has representation on the CLIA board
through appointment of a board member and an alternate. There
is currently a position open for the alternate.
Preference will be given to those
with experience in general insurance principles including
underwriting, policy interpretation and claims management.
Experience in professional liability claims and regulation of the
legal profession is also an asset.
Attendance at two board meetings
each year, usually out of province, and on assigned committees is
required.

Senate of the University of Regina
April 2, 2012
The Law Society of Saskatchewan is
seeking a volunteer who will represent the Society by being a
member on the Senate of the University of Regina. It is a 3
year term commencing July 1, 2012.
The Senate position evolves around
the academic welfare of the university, deals with academic policy
and ultimately acts as a court in academic affairs. For more
information on the duties of a Senate member, please visit University of Regina
website.
Interested volunteers can submit a

CPD Program Committee
February 29, 2012
The Law Society of Saskatchewan is
committed to providing continuing professional development
opportunities to the profession. The CPD Planning Committee
will assist the Director of Admissions & Education and the CPD
Program Specialist in the selection of subject matter, presenters,
and the organization and delivery of continuing professional
development programming.
The Law Society is seeking
applications for the CPD Planning Committee. Selection for
the Committee should be representative of the profession including
diversity in practice, geographic location, gender, etc. An
interest or experience in education would also be an asset.

area of practice involving financial dealings, to serve as a member
of the Audit Committee.

E.M. Culliton Scholarship Endowment
January 9, 2012
As a tribute to the former Chief
Justice E. M. Culliton, an endowment was established by the Law
Society of Saskatchewan to provide that in perpetuity a special
scholarship is to be awarded for the pursuit of post-graduate
studies in criminal law.
The value of the scholarship to be
awarded in 2012 has not yet been finally determined, but the
maximum amount available is expected to be $10,000. Up to two
scholarships may be awarded in any one year. The deadline
date for receipt of applications is May 4th,
2012.

College of Law Endowment Fund

The Law Society of Saskatchewan is
seeking applications for appointment to the College of Law
Endowment Fund.
The College of Law Endowment Fund was established to provide
financial support to specific programs and services at the College
of Law, University of Saskatchewan.
The College of Law Endowment Fund
Committee is composed of the Dean of the College of Law, one
representative appointed by the Board of the Law Foundation of
Saskatchewan and one representative appointed by the Benchers of
the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
The Committee provides financial
oversight with respect to the Endowment Fund and acts in an
advisory capacity to the Dean of the College of Law with respect to
Fund expenditures. The Committee meets one to two times per year in
Saskatoon.
This appointment is for a 2 year
term and may be renewed.

The Legal Profession/ISC Liaison Committee

Information Services Corporation
meets with the profession on the following matters:
- Policy development or changes on matters of significance to the
operation of the registry;
- Amendments to the Act and regulations (The Land Titles Act,
2000, The Land Titles Regulations, 2001, The Condominium Property
Act, the Land Surveys Act, 2000; and
- Product enhancement.
The Law Society has 4
representatives on the Committee which meets quarterly.
Applications are being accepted to
replace one member on the Committee. Applicants will be selected
based upon their experience with ISC and their representation of
the membership of the profession.
