Membership Status Changes and Renewal
In addition to active membership, the Law Society has several
categories of membership including the following:
- Inactive Member
- Retired Member

Applying to Become an Inactive Member
An inactive member has all the rights and duties of membership
except that the member is not permitted to practice law.
If you would like to become an inactive member of the Law
Society, please complete an Application to Change Membership
Status Form (Form P-1A) and submit to the Law
Society (See Rule 210).
Applying to Become a Retired Member
Rule 206: A Member may become a retired member if the member
is:
- at least 55 years of age and has been a member of the Society
or the judiciary for not less than 10 years immediately preceding
the application; or
- is, on account of disability, permanently unable to practice
law and delivers to the Executive Director a declaration stating
that the member has permanently retired from the practice of
law.
A retired member has all the rights and duties of membership except
that the member is not:
- permitted to practise law
- required to pay the annual fee
If you would like to become a retired member of the Law
Society, please complete an Application to Change Membership
Status Form (Form P-1A) and submit to the Law
Society (See Rule 210).
Resigning Your Membership
If you would like to resign your membership,
please complete an Application to Change Membership
Status Form (Form P-1A) and submit to the Law
Society (See Rule 210).
Reinstating Your Membership
If you have resigned as a member of the Law Society and would
like to reinstate your membership, please see Rule 211.
Membership Renewals
Membership with the Law Society is renewed on an annual
basis. Your membership fee invoice is enclosed with your
renewal package.
