The Law Society has recently received a number of enquiries regarding the provision of cheque images in place of original cancelled (cashed) cheques. Case No. 32738 December 11, 2009 Saskatchewan Justice Minister and Attorney General Don Morgan is pressing for the Senate to pass Bill C-15 without amendment, which would create minimum penalties for offences related to trafficking in serious drugs when that trafficking is linked to organized crime. Effective December 11, the Public Prosecutions Division of the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General has revised their policy on when jail time would be sought in cases of repeat drunk drivers. You can search for both books and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) articles in a single search, request books and articles online, and link to selected full-text articles. Other search features include an advanced resources search and full-text keyword search of CPD articles. We would like to thank the Law Foundation of Saskatchewan for its financial support for the Continuing Professional Development Digitization Project. Their grant made it possible to scan the entire collection of SKLESI seminars from the early 1980s to 2008. Most of those articles are now uploaded and ready to use via this resource catalogue. The entire collection of seminars and selected Bar Admission course materials will be uploaded by early 2010. We at the Library are working hard to meet your research needs. Libraries has negotiated an online subscription to Electronic Discovery in
Canada, an e-book from CCH Canadian. This e-book contains an in-depth
summary of current e-discovery and computer forensics technologies and best
practices, and outlines the steps to prepare for litigation. It includes
instructions on how to implement an electronic document retention policy,
and defines procedures to request, preserve, collect, filter, search, review
and produce admissible electronic evidence. December 1, 2009 In recognition of the contribution of lawyers in Saskatchewan to supporting access to justice for persons of limited means, Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan and the Law Society of Saskatchewan have established an annual award to recognize outstanding pro bono service. The Award will be presented on January 29, 2010 during the Lawyer's Charity Gala sponsored by the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the Canadian Bar Association Saskatchewan Branch, and the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. November 26, 2009 The first Lawyers' Charity Gala will take place on Friday, January 29, 2010 at TCU Place in Saskatoon. This will be an annual event to raise funds for pro bono services, benefitting CLASSIC and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan respectively. The event will alternate between Saskatoon and Regina and the 2010 proceeds will go to CLASSIC. The event is sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association, the College of Law and the Law Society. July 3, 2009 Sterling Gilbert McLean has filed a notice of appeal with the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, appealing the sentence of the Law Society Discipline Committee on June 15, 2009. The 4 month suspension of Sterling McLean from the practice of law has been stayed pending an Appeal. While Mr. McLean's Appeal is pending, he will be allowed to practice law under the supervision of a practice advisor approved by the Director of Discipline. Roman, has allowed information from the social networking website Facebook to be used as evidence. February 24, 2009 Judge Tucker of the Saskatchewan Provincial Court released his judgment in the case, R. v. Ahenakew. Mr. Ahenakew had been found guilty of willfully promoting hatred against an identifiable group. After a trial, on appeal, a new trial was ordered and this is the judgment resulting from the new trial. ( R. v. For more information, please see the LII news release. January 28, 2009 This week's online edition of The Lawyers Weekly features commentary by Critin Schmitz on the S.C.C. case R v. McNeil, on the matter of Crown disclosure in criminal cases. There are also articles on the Centre for the Legal Profession, Canadian competition law, cross-border litigation, and the 'lull before the storm' in bankruptcy law. January 27, 2009 The Law Society of Saskatchewan Libraries is pleased to announce the online publication of our Criminal Law Research Guide, comprehensive lists of key texts, journals, forms, encyclopedia and sources of case law. January 19, 2009 The Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice and Attorney General have announced the implementation of perimeter screening in the Saskatoon Provincial Court on Monday, January 19, and in the Queen's Bench and Family Court over the next several weeks. For more information, please see the official news release. January 16, 2009 The Winter 2008/2009 issue of LAWPRO Magazine is now available for download (PDF, 2.2MB). The new issue is entitled Surviving the Slide: Dealing with the Tough Economy, and features a number of articles on this and other topics. January 13, 2009 The Provincial Court of Saskatchewan has sought the assistance of a sentencing circle in the matter of Her Majesty the Queen v. Christopher Charles Pauchay, 2009 SKPC 4. The sentencing circle is to be held at the Provincial Court in Rose Valley. A program that helps parents understand the effects of family legal disputes on their children is now mandatory in all Queen's Bench Court locations in Saskatchewan. The Parenting after Separation and Divorce program has been well-received by judges, lawyers and clients. A survey of parents who attended the program shows a 90 per cent approval rate. Many family law lawyers indicate that settlements are often achieved after their clients have participated in the program. January 12, 2009 Quentin Douglas Agnew has been appointed a judge of the Provincial Court for Saskatoon. Fifteen Saskatchewan lawyers were honoured with Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) appointments on Dec. 31, 2008. January 8, 2009 The Supreme Court of Canada December 23, 2008 news release included the following announcement: The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, announced today that The Honourable Thomas Cromwell will be sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court of Canada on January 5, 2009 at a private ceremony. The official welcome ceremony for Justice Cromwell will take place at 10:30 a.m., on February 16, 2009, in the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court of Canada. On this occasion, it is expected that there will be remarks by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, and representatives of the Government of Canada, the Government of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Nova Scotia. Mr. Justice Thomas Cromwell was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on December 22, 2008. example: In rural libraries, use the number on the top line to find
