June 18, 2010 CHANGES TO GST IN SASKATCHEWAN - Effective July 1, 2010 - You may think that harmonization of GST/PST in Ontario and BC does not affect us here in good ol' Saskatchewan - WRONG. A number of members have been approached with the latest scam whereby a divorced woman from the US seeks help from a law firm in Canada to obtain funds owed by her ex-husband who lives in Saskatchewan. Excerpts from the actual emails between the fraudster and one of our members are attached. May 3, 2010 Wynyard Court House to Re-Open - The major renovations undertaken at the Queen’s Bench Court House in Wynyard will be completed and the Court House will re-open effective Monday, May 10, 2010. To facilitate the movement of staff, files and equipment back to the Court House, the temporary office location will be closed during the afternoon of Friday, May 7, 2010. Regular Queen’s Bench Chambers sittings will resume at the Wynyard Court House on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. Section 3(19), and only that part of s. 42 that repeals s. 117 of The Securities Act, 1988; of the Securities Amendment Act, 2007, S.S. 2007, c.41, is proclaimed into force, effective April 30, 2010. April 28, 2010 OTTAWA, April 23, 2010 – The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada announced the appointment of the Honourable Neal W. Caldwell, a partner with the firm McDougall Gauley LLP in Saskatoon, as a judge of the Court of Appeal, to replace Madam Justice D.C. Hunter who elected to become a supernumerary judge effective August 14, 2009. The Journal of Information, Law & Technology (JILT) has been renamed the European Journal of Law and Technology, with a special first issue on A History of Legal Informatics. March 29, 2010 Bill 129, The Enforcement of Money Judgments Act is currently before the Legislative Assembly. Professor Ronald C.C.Cuming of the University of Saskatchewan College of Law has prepared a Guide to this major new law reform Bill. In the Guide, Professor Cuming provides both a description and an analysis of the new structure for money judgment enforcement in Saskatchewan contained in Bill 129, The Enforcement of Money Judgments Act. The Guide addresses the conceptual underpinnings of the new system and a detailed examination of its provisions. This Guide is available as a free down-load from the website of the Queen's Printer. March 18, 2010 The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Saskatchewan Branch is hosting the annual Law Day Luncheons in Regina and Saskatoon. This year the keynote speaker will be Mr. Alan Borovoy.
Mr. Borovoy served from 1968 to 2009 as the General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
