ICYMI, Round-Up of 2023 Saskatchewan Access to Justice Week Highlights
November 15, 2022The Honourable Bronwyn Eyre, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Saskatchewan designated October 24 to 28, 2022 as the Seventh Annual Saskatchewan Access to Justice (SK A2J) Week, coinciding with the Third Annual National Access to Justice Week. Both initiatives offered an opportunity to highlight projects that help promote A2J and invited new voices into the A2J conversation! Each year, A2J stakeholders choose a specific theme that all Canadian jurisdictions can ‘rally’ around. This year’s theme in Saskatchewan, and across Canada, was data and evidence informed policy making.
CREATE Justice and the Law Society of Saskatchewan collaborated on co-coordinating SK A2J Week. Some of the week’s initiatives include:
- the creation of two infographics highlighting legal justice needs in Saskatchewan, legal information resources, and family law initiatives:
- Accessing Legal Information in Saskatchewan Infographic – from the Saskatchewan Access to Legal Information (SALI) Project
- Family Law in Saskatchewan Infographic – from Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City Inc. (CLASSIC), Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice, the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan and the Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan (PLEA).
- a drop-in family law information and assistance clinic, and a clinic providing information and assistance on making a will (hosted by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice);
- a roundtable discussion with leaders of the province’s justice sector on their use of data and design methods in creating programs to improving family justice in Saskatchewan.
- a presentation by the Law Societies of Saskatchewan and, in partnership with JusticeTrans, on the results of an Access-to-Justice legal needs assessment of Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender nonconforming (2STNBGN) people; and
- Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan shared stories from their volunteers each day of the week to celebrate A2J Week.
SK A2J Week is a key way that justice stakeholders can come together to collaborate, and pause to reflect on what has been achieved – and what needs to improve. The impact of the week is borne out by data. Over 100 people have seen the roundtable discussion on data and design methods and 79 people attended the presentation by JusticeTrans.
