The Law Society of Saskatchewan, in conjunction with the law societies of Alberta, Manitoba, British Columbia and Nova Scotia conducted two surveys from May through June 2024 to better understand the current state of the articling system across the five provinces.
One survey asked articling students and new lawyers (who articled in the last five years) about the types of training and mentoring students are receiving, issues related to discrimination or harassment and how prepared students feel to enter practise. The second survey asked similar questions of firm recruiters, principals and mentors.
The Law Society heard from 79 student and new lawyer respondents in Saskatchewan (an estimated 17% percent response rate) and engaged a third-party research group to analyze the information collected.
Articling is an integral part of the Bar admission training process. Like other law societies across Canada, the Law Society of Saskatchewan is committed to enhancing the articling experience and better preparing articling students for law practice in the future.
