Description :

The Courts and Community Justice Division of the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General has an opening for a Crown Counsel Assistant to assist in the Legal and Policy Services group. This is an eighteen-month term position.

The successful candidate will have relevant education and/or experience and will work under the supervision of one or more lawyers in the Legal and Policy Services group. 

This position requires an understanding of the criminal and civil litigation process, as well as court process and procedure. Duties may include:

  • Coordinating court-ordered mental health assessments, including responding to inquiries from court staff, the judiciary, Crown prosecutors, defence counsel, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other health professionals.
  • Supporting legal counsel appearing on court-appointed counsel applications, including responding to inquiries from court staff and lawyers, reviewing application materials, and maintaining statistics.
  • Locating complainants’ counsel for applications made under s.276/278 of the Criminal Code.
  • Assisting in the preparation of legal documents, correspondence, and policy.
  • Completing other tasks as assigned, including conducting research.

This position requires superior computer, time-management, and interpersonal skills. Experience with legal research software (CanLii and QuickLaw), as well as CJIMS, is also an asset.
