Today’s legal market is increasingly more competitive. While the billable hour remains the prominent form of charging clients for legal services, alternate billing arrangements are both being sought by clients and offered by law firms. Clients are looking for ways to increase value as well as certainty over costs for their legal services. Lawyers seek release from the tyranny of the billable hour and see the possibility of generating revenue that is not limited by the finite resource of their time. The result is the rise in popularity of Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFAs). Simply put, an AFA is a billing arrangement based on a structure other than the standard billable hour. This webinar will discuss how AFAs are currently trending against the billable hour, the most common types of AFA’s, when they might be used, their pros and cons, and how AFAs are considered under Saskatchewan’s Rules and Code of Professional Conduct.
This webinar will be presented by Amanda Quayle, a partner with McDougall Gauley LLP in Regina.
