Beware of Cybercrime

April 14, 2020

Be aware that online phishing attempts are becoming more and more prevalent during this time. Two Manitoba law firms were recently affected by ransomware. Emails that appear to be from known sources asking you to open an attachment or click on a link may be malicious. The most recently reported attempts are of fake emails arriving from known senders asking the receiver to access a file on OneDrive by clicking a link. If you receive any unsolicited email with a bare attachment or link, or with any other red flags, it is best practice to phone the sender to make sure it is legitimate.

Check out the resources below:
  • 30-min Webinar: CLIA Cybercrime Policy: What is cybercrime and how do I ensure coverage? (Qualifies for 0.5 CPD Hours, all of which qualifies for Ethics)
  • Article: Beware of cybersecurity risks during COVID-19 and working from home
  • Article: MAZE Ransomware warning from the Law Society of Manitoba
  • Article: Ransomware attacks lock 2 Manitoba law firms out of computer systems
Note that to qualify for coverage under CLIA’s Cybercrime policy your firm must have:
  1. A firewall between the firm’s systems and the internet;
  2. Up-to-date antivirus and malware endpoint protection on computers and laptops; and
  3. Weekly data back-ups.
To report a cybercrime event, email a description of the circumstances to [email protected]. If live counselling is required, insureds may call 1-833-383-1488. For more information, please visit the SLIA website.
