SUMMARY:FOAJ-SATA Webinar: Virtual Hearings – Here to Stay!
DESCRIPTION:To quote Sir Winston Churchill “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” \nJoin tribunal members and staff from across Canada in a free webinar to learn best practices for virtual hearings. The requirements of social distancing have accelerated the use of technology as an alternative to holding in person hearings. What are the important points to maintain decorum in the hearing? As an advocate or a board member are there any changes to your ethical obligations? Learn practical tips for setting up and conducting a hearing using video conferencing. The virtual hearing will likely develop into one of the procedural alternatives at the disposal of an administrative decision maker. Having the flexibility and confidence to hold virtual hearings will give tribunals another way to offer cost effective and timely resolution of disputes. Participants will receive resource materials. \nPresented by Adrian Wright and Carol Zukiwski\nAttendance to this Webinar may count for 1 CPD Credit. Registration Deadline: February 17th\, 2021.

SUMMARY:STLA Pediatric Concussions: Are We Mislabeling These Cases?
DESCRIPTION:The ramifications of pediatric concussions are important for personal injury lawyers to be aware of when representing a child\, especially where grade report cards showed the child was performing well academically pre-injury and academic performance subsequently worsened post-injury. \nDr. Patrick Quaid will share his experience and research\, published in both optometric and medical journals\, on the effects of concussions on the visual system\, including the effect of eye teaming issues on reading efficiency. \nJoining Dr. Quaid will be trial attorney Michelle Jorge\, past Director on the Board of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and a former AAJ State Delegate and Board of Governor. \nFor more info: https://www.stla.ca/?pg=semwebCatalog&panel=showLive&seminarid=13407&linksource=calendar\, or contact STLA at admin@stla.ca.

SUMMARY:STLA Shifting Paradigms: Speed Trial and Damages (Session Two)
DESCRIPTION:In Session Two of this three-part series on the shifting paradigms in the speed trial and damages\, Joe Fried shows how to work with different types of witnesses. He will cover liability witnesses\, such as the police officer\, eye-witness\, and expert; medical summary witness; doctor; life care planner; economist; before and after witness; and your client. \nHe will discuss how the new paradigm impacts your approach to the hard parts of your case\, editing depositions for use at trial\, cross examination\, jury selection\, opening statement\, and closing argument. \nFor more info: https://www.stla.ca/?pg=semwebCatalog&panel=showLive&seminarid=13374&linksource=calendar or contact STLA at admin@stla.ca.

SUMMARY:STLA Shifting Paradigms: Speed Trial and Damages (Session One)
DESCRIPTION:In Session One of this three-part series on the shifting paradigms in the speed trial and damages\, Joe Fried conducts a deep dive into the speed trial and how the new paradigm shapes your case preparation and trial strategy. He will discuss the present paradigm for conducting trials\, why it takes so long to try a case and whether or not there is a correlation between the length of a trial and the verdict amount. \nHe will show how fear and limiting beliefs play into trial strategy and presentation and explore whether other paradigms should be considered. What if you could work from a new paradigm that identified what the case needs to be about and what you need to prove to win\, how to get to the point quickly with less fluff\, fewer witnesses and fewer points? \nYou will learn how the new paradigm works in practice\, including how to limit the number of issues and the number of witnesses needed to prove your case and how to make it easy for jurors to get the point. \nFor more info: https://www.stla.ca/?pg=semwebCatalog&panel=showLive&seminarid=13371&linksource=calendar
