International Women’s Day

March 5, 2025

International Women’s Day on Saturday March 8, 2025, is a day to recognize and celebrate women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The Government of Canada’s theme for 2025 is “Strength in Every Story”. 

Upcoming Event

The Law Society is co-sponsoring a free in-person event in Saskatoon on March 6 from 3:00–5:00 pm in partnership with the Canadian Bar Association (Saskatchewan), CREATE Justice, and the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law titled “Partners in Progress: Allyship for Equity in Law”. The event will feature a discussion with Jocelyn Peltier-Huntley on allyship in the workplace and is open to law students, Law Society members and members of the judiciary. Further details are available on the Law Society’s website.

Continuing Professional Development Webinars

Free recorded webinars focused on women in law are available from the Law Society’s Continuing Professional Development program:

  • The Elephant in the Room: Gender Bias in the Legal Profession: A multidisciplinary panel discusses gender bias and barriers in the legal profession. This webinar focuses on recognizing different types of bias, how to interrupt bias with real-life examples, and strategies for changing bias – both from the top-down and bottom-up.

Legal Resources

The Law Society’s Legal Resource Library has a number of items related to International Women’s Day:

  • Canada’s Chief Justice: Beverley McLachlin’s legacy of law and leadership
  • Creating a seat at the table: reflections from women in law
  • Gender, sex, and the law in Canada
  • Leading the way: Canadian women in the law
  • Women, law, and equality: a discussion guide

Members of the Law Society can borrow texts by contacting Legal Resources staff or by placing a request through the online catalogue. Members of the public can view print texts by visiting a Law Society Legal Resources library location.

Other learning opportunities/events

Other learning opportunities and events to celebrate International Women’s Day are occurring across the province:

  • On March 6 from 1:00–2:00 pm, the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation, in partnership with the University of Regina, is hosting a discussion with keynote speaker Heather O’Watch at the University of Regina. The event will explore key issues in international development, gender equality, and youth leadership, providing opportunity for students, young leaders, and community members to engage in dialogue on building a more inclusive and equitable world.
  • On March 7, 8, and 14, SaskMusic is presenting six benefit concerts at locations across the province, with proceeds going to charities supporting women. Each concert features artists from different areas of the province and a mix of musical styles. More information can be found on SaskMusic’s website.
  • The YWCA is hosting events in Regina and Saskatoon:
    • On March 5 at 11:30 am, an EmpowHER Luncheon will be held in Saskatoon at The Studio at Midtown. The event will feature a panel of women sharing stories, experiences, and initiatives that impact the fight against homelessness.
    • On March 8 at 5:00 pm, a Celebration of International Women’s Day event will be held in Regina at the YWCA Centre for Women and Families. The event will feature a film, discussion, and live performances with the theme “Portrayals of Women in Media: What Helps or Hurts the Cause of Gender Equity?”
