New Hearing Administrator position created for adjudicative process
July 31, 2020We are pleased to announce that following an open selection process, Greg Walen, Q.C. has been appointed by the Benchers to serve as Hearing Administrator for the Law Society of Saskatchewan. The Hearing Administrator role is new to the Law Society. Core duties will include participating in the adjudicator selection process; act as the primary case management official on all files; manage optional preliminary motions destined for adjudication by the Hearing Committee; and serve in a mediator role similar to that of a pre-trial judge to attempt to facilitate resolution of matter where possible (something that a Hearing Chair cannot do in the current case management process). While some aspects of the role will commence immediately, the focus of Greg’s initial work will be to establish new policies, procedures and processes which, as part of our commitment to continuous improvement, are intended to increase the transparency and efficiency of our discipline process for members and the public we serve.
A full proposal will be considered by the Benchers at Convocation in November, with full implementation expected to begin January 1, 2021. Greg brings a wealth of knowledge to this new role. In addition to being esteemed trial counsel in the province for nearly 40 years, Greg was a Bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan from 2005 to 2012 serving as President in 2012. From 2013 to 2018 Greg was a Council member of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada representing the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
