File and time management are the cornerstones to effective client service and, thus, to every legal practice.
Every client, and every client matter, requires a file and each file needs to be appropriately managed so that you can provide efficient service and comply your ethical obligations under the Code of Professional Conduct. To manage legal files appropriately, you must put systems and procedures in place for document management, file storage, and file security.
Managing files necessarily involves managing your time, which requires planning your time, setting reminders, and recording time spent on files. Implementing proper processes for time management will increase your productivity and allow you to provide timely and efficient service to your clients.

For the purposes of this module, as the context requires, “file” includes: a paper file and/or computer file/folder, as well as the concept of a file as the matter for which the lawyer is engaged (e.g., “I am working on the Smith file”).
