Introduction and Objectives

File retention is an issue for every firm, large or small, and one that is complicated by the variety of file types and file mediums employed by firms.

Note that this module is not about file and document management, which are covered in Module 14. In this module, we will limit our discussion to trust records and client files and will cover general principles in relation to file retention, closing, and destruction as they apply to client files, whether paper or electronic.

Objectives

The objectives of the File Retention and Disposal module are:

  1. To explain why you need to keep your closed files and suggest for how long.
  2. To review acceptable methods of document disposal, file storage and file destruction.

Although we aim to present a comprehensive Module, this Module is not exhaustive. This Module is not a substitute for exercising professional judgment and does not constitute legal advice.

Time Estimate for this Module (including Quiz): 40 minutes
