Today is the official launch of Saskatchewan Access to Justice week! This awareness campaign will unfold over the next week and showcase through “campaign cards” some of the excellent work that members of the Saskatchewan Access to Justice Working Group and other justice and community members are undertaking to help improve access to justice for Saskatchewan residents. Please distribute the “campaign cards” widely – via email, on social media (using the hash-tag #SKA2J2016), and download and print them for your office door, waiting room, etc. (Download a full package of the campaign cards)
To celebrate the contributions of those involved in improving access to justice in the province, “A Spotlight on Access to Justice Champions: A Volunteer Appreciation Event” will be held on Thursday, October 20 at the College of Law:
Pro Bono Students Canada is inviting volunteers – past, present and future – to drop by the College of Law for donuts, coffee, and conversation around access to justice. The ongoing contributions of our dedicated student volunteers and supervising lawyers to the PBSC program and access to justice is appreciated.
We’d also like to highlight some of the great work of Pro Bono, CLASSIC and PLEA:
Pro Bono Students Canada & PLEA
PLEA and Pro Bono Students Canada (Saskatchewan Chapter) are partnering to provide family law help to the public at the PLEA offices Tuesdays from 1:00 -3:00. Sessions run every Tuesday* in October, November, January, February & March. There is no cost and registration is not required. Please see our previous post for more information.
On Friday, October 21, PLEA is launching NewLi – Legal Information for Newcomers. NewLi provides plain language legal information about laws, governments and the justice system. It promotes access to justice for this vulnerable segment of the population by allaying fears that may keep newcomers from confidently participating in and benefiting from Canada’s justice and administrative systems.
More information about the NewLi site will be provided on Friday. Stay tuned for this and more access to justice events!
Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan offers free legal clinics throughout the province of Saskatchewan. The clinics are important in improving access to justice for Saskatchewan residents, as lawyer volunteers provide free legal assistance to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer and who do not qualify for Legal Aid. Income testing does apply. Lawyers at the clinics generally do not represent clients in court, but do provide ongoing legal advice to help clients move their legal matter forward. Lawyers may also make referrals for further assistance. Clinic locations are currently in Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Estevan, Weyburn, Yorktown, Moose Jaw, Meadow Lake, North Battleford, La Ronge and Prince Albert.
