The ninth annual Saskatchewan Access to Justice Week will be held from October 28 to November 2, 2024, and the theme is Increasing Impact: Collaboration, Change, and Capacity Building. This week-long event is part of a nationwide initiative to create a more inclusive legal system by fostering awareness, education, and community engagement. Various in-person and virtual sessions are open to everyone, from legal professionals to community advocates, students, and the public interested in learning more about access to justice issues.
This year’s lineup in Saskatchewan features Law Fair events at the Saskatoon Public Library and Regina Public Library, offering accessible, informative, free help sessions, presentations, and tradeshows. These events are not just opportunities to learn; they are platforms for empowerment. They allow the public to learn about their rights, understand legal processes, and obtain guidance on navigating the justice system. Experts in family law, wills, and estates will be on hand to provide consultations and answer questions. The events are scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024, in Saskatoon and Saturday, November 2, 2024, in Regina.
Also, a free webinar titled Focus on Gladue: Gladue Report Submissions in Saskatchewan will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. The webinar will discuss Gladue Report submissions in Saskatchewan as critical tools for ensuring that the courts take the unique circumstances of Indigenous people into account, particularly regarding sentencing. This webinar will provide professionals and the public with a better understanding of how these reports contribute to fairer outcomes within the justice system.
An in-person session titled Becoming a Lawyer will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the University of Saskatchewan for those interested in entering the legal profession, a meaningful way to contribute to access to justice.
Finally, in support of the week, the Saskatchewan Access to Legal Information Initiative has created an Accessing Legal Information in Saskatchewan infographic, highlighting how people in Saskatchewan access information about the law.
Access to Justice Week is a reflective period acknowledging our shared responsibility to ensure that the legal system is equitable and accessible to all, especially those facing legal service barriers.
