Today on Legal Sourcery, we are excited to highlight a neat primary law resource called Raw Law. Raw Law is a free case law database from Maritime Law Book (MLB), the publisher that creates the Saskatchewan Reports and many other provincial law reports in Canada. Raw Law’s case law collection is composed of the provincial law report series MLB has published since 1969. While there is a charge to access the MLB headnotes and annotated case law features, the unedited “raw law” cases are freely available. If you are having trouble finding a case on CanLII or the Saskatchewan Cases Database, why not try searching Raw Law?
Raw Law can be accessed from the MLB Website. The search interface is clean and uncluttered and provides a smooth user friendly experience. Search terms can be typed in the search box at the top of the screen. Jurisdiction can be selected and narrowed from the database menu in the centre of the screen. Boolean search words and a date menu can be found on the right side of the screen.
Raw Law can be easily searched by case name or neutral citation for Saskatchewan cases. For example, 120 Sask R 17 or Benson v. Benson.
Raw Law can also be searched for cases that mention a particular section of a statute. For example, cases that comment on section 10 of the Farm Security Act. In this search, I am looking for “10” within the same paragraph as “farm security act”.
Finally, Raw Law can be searched for case law on a point of law. For example, case law that comments on defamation and damages.
From the list of search results, simply select “Raw Law Version of Case (no headnote)” to access the case.
Helpfully, Raw Law provides a list of practical legal resources and quick links on their resources page. The list provides links to federal legislation, government websites, tribunal decisions, provincial legislation, law societies, and international legal documents.
Slaw, a leading Canadian online legal magazine, and MLB have recently partnered to provide high quality summaries of selected cases. According to Slaw, recent cases that discuss new technology, new statutes, or novel facts are selected and summarized. Please find the weekly summaries available online.
Please leave a comment and let us know what you think about Raw Law! Did you like it as much as we did? If you have any research questions, feel free to contact the library at firstname.lastname@example.org or (306) 569-8020.
