DESCRIPTION:Qualifies for 1.5 CPD hours\, all of which qualify for Ethics. \nThis is a replay of the Oct 26th presentation for Access to Justice Week: This talk presents the results of an Access-to-Justice legal needs assessment of Two Spirit\, trans\, non-binary and gender nonconforming (2STNBGN) people conducted by JusticeTrans across the lands colonially known as Canada. Tai Jacob\, former Executive Director\, Justice Trans.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Making Parenting Plans: Helping Lawyers to Facilitate Resolution of Parenting Disputes (CPD 343)
DESCRIPTION:Qualifies for 1.0 CPD hour. \nThe Divorce Act amendments (Bill C-78) and Saskatchewan Children’s Law Act 2020\, reforms that came into effect in March 2021\, include provisions to encourage parents to make parenting plans (or agreements) that govern parenting time\, parental decision-making and other issues related to children. These plans may include aspirational statements about the parents’ expectations for themselves and their children. These plans\, or parts of them\, may be incorporated into court orders. Parenting plans are generally expected to evolve as children grow older and the circumstances of the children and their parents change\, giving rise to questions about how much detail to include in a parenting plan\, or the portion included in a court order. \nThis program will survey the child development literature\, legal principles\, and practical considerations that lawyers need to consider in making parenting plans\, including issues related to scheduling and parental decision-making\, as well as offering advice about negotiating plans in higher conflict cases. It will include reference to the Parenting Plan Guide and Template prepared by the Ontario Chapter of the Association of Family & Conciliation Courts (AFCC-O) and materials prepared the Department of Justice that can assist lawyers\, judges and parents in making parent plans\, as well providing templates for terms that may be included. \nPresenters: Nicholas Bala and Rachel Birnbaum

SUMMARY:Free Workshop - Code of Conduct Amendments: Direct Supervision Requirements (CPD 347)
DESCRIPTION:Qualifies for 2.0 CPD hours\, all of which qualify for Ethics \nThe Law Society of Saskatchewan is implementing recommendations from the final report of the Legal Services Task Team. Recommendation No. 4 identified direct supervision requirements as an area to examine more closely in order to increase access to legal services. The Code of Conduct provides guidance to lawyers providing direct supervision. Since December of 2021\, the Law Society has been engaged in outreach and consultation on proposed amendments to direct supervision requirements in the Code of Conduct. This involved many stakeholders\, including focus group discussions with 133 participants and an online survey completed by 324 individuals – 189 lawyers and 135 paraprofessionals. \nAs a result of these consultations\, the Code of Conduct has been amended to allow greater flexibility for staff working under the supervision of a lawyer to provide delegated legal services. Importantly\, lawyers maintain responsibility for all delegation at their discretion – it is not mandatory but rather possible to expand delegation in appropriate instances where the knowledge\, skills\, and experience of staff so permit. \nObjectives \nJoin this workshop to learn: \n\n-the new regulatory framework and practice for direct supervision;\n-how direct supervision provides the opportunity to increase access to legal services;\n-the business case for effective use of direct supervision;\n-lessons from insurance claims regarding direct supervision\, managing client expectations and interacting with clients and other legal professionals via direct supervision; and\n-good practices and dealing with challenges that can arise in direct supervision.\n\nPresenters will include the Law Society’s Director of Regulation\, Saskatchewan Lawyers’ Insurance Association\, and practitioners.

SUMMARY:Free Workshop - The Keepers of Stories (CPD 334)
DESCRIPTION:Qualifies for 2.0 CPD hours. \nIndividuals in helping professions – whether it be health care\, counsellors or lawyers – regularly interact with individuals who are there as a result of traumatic experiences.  Part of the helper’s role is to listen and respond to these stories\, which can often be intense and difficult. Over time\, exposure to trauma stories can negatively impact a person’s view of the world\, their physical health and their work. On September 14th\, the Regina and Area Sexual Assault Centre will deliver The Keepers of Stories\, a workshop designed to help you recognize the signs of vicarious trauma (or “burn out”) and help you as an individual\, and collectively as an organization\, develop strategies to build and maintain resilience. This is for any lawyer working with trauma\, and particularly those working with families and survivors of residential schools\, sexual violence and interpersonal violence. \nPresenters: Moravia de la O and Mary Zwane

SUMMARY:REPLAY: Lawyer Well-Being: Concrete Strategies to Thrive in Law (CPD 325)
DESCRIPTION:Originally recorded 2002 May 3\nQualifies for 1.5 CPD Hours. \nThis webinar will explore mental health and well-being in the legal profession\, and will offer concrete strategies regarding how to improve mental health. We are happiest\, healthiest\, and most successful when we adopt healthy lifestyles and work habits. But long hours\, demanding clients\, complex files\, and difficult opposing counsel can be occupational hazards in the practice of law\, and contribute to anxiety\, depression\, addiction\, and burnout. When we are depressed or anxious\, we have negative thoughts about ourselves (self-criticism)\, our experiences (general negativity)\, and our future (hopelessness). Understanding how you automatically respond to the challenges of your practice\, and learning coping mechanisms that will help you manage anxiety\, depression\, addiction\, and burnout will help you build a flourishing career. This webinar will explore: \n-Lawyer mental health.\n-How improving self-awareness can help you manage your emotions.\n-The importance of recognizing your automatic response to stress.\n-Strategies to dispute negative thinking and better manage your mood.\n-How perfectionism fuels procrastination\, undermines self-confidence\, and perpetuates anxiety and depression.\n-How to set boundaries to manage expectations and improve well-being. \nWebinar registration includes the Lawyer Well-Being workbook. \nBena Stock is a former litigation lawyer and an authority on mental health and well-being in the legal profession. She is a trusted advisor to lawyers\, law firms and corporate legal departments\, providing counselling\, education and training\, and consultation on how to navigate mental health and lawyer well-being.

SUMMARY:Free Workshop: Gray Area Thinking with Ellie Krug (CPD 329)
DESCRIPTION:Qualifies for 2.0 CPD Hours\, all of which qualify for Ethics. \nToday\, each one of us will unconsciously categorize\, catalogue and group others who appear “different” from “us”. It’s human nature. Lawyers\, especially\, learn to notice and critique differences quickly. This often leads to black and white thinking\, as in “we” versus “them” or “good” versus “bad” or “Canadian” versus “immigrant” or “newcomer” and many other isolating labels. It impacts our work\, our work product\, our work environment and our profession – a profession that impacts directly how just and inclusive our world is. \nSo\, how do we move beyond this? How do we create the inclusion and compassion we want to see in our profession and in the world around us? To find out\, join national speaker Ellen (Ellie) Krug\, for her Gray Area Thinking™ human inclusivity training. She provides a clear\, easy-to-follow toolset for moving beyond our insider/outsider thoughts and fears.  \nIn 2009\, at the age of fifty-two\, Ellie – then a civil trial attorney in Cedar Rapids\, Iowa\, transitioned from male to female. She was the first Iowa lawyer to transition genders and one of the few attorneys nationally to try a jury case in the other gender. Transitioning genders gave Ellie the opportunity for a “do-over”\, which has included working to make the world fairer and more inclusive for all humans\, particularly those considered “Other.”
