We are happy to announce that today, the Government of Saskatchewan repealed the temporary emergency regulations related to remote execution of certain documents and wills and replaced those regulations with permanent regulations allowing for remote execution of documents via electronic means (i.e. video calls) to continue long-term beyond the end of the public emergency period. Law Society of Saskatchewan Publications Publications Update November 2014

Publications Update November 2014

November 4, 2014

By Kelly Laycock

Some of you may have noticed that there has been a lack of my Tips from the Editor posts on our blog recently. While I’m sure you are all anxious to read more about grammar and punctuation, my time has been consumed lately by some fantastic projects that I think you’ll like even more! So here is a look at what the Law Society Library has been busy publishing this Fall season!

New!  Saskatchewan Builders’ Lien Manual, Second Edition

First and foremost, I want to share that we are very close to releasing the much-anticipated Second Edition of the Saskatchewan Builders’ Lien Manual (previously published as The Builders’ Lien Act: A Practitioner’s Manual by W. Brent Gough). This new edition, generously  updated by Collin K Hirshfeld of McKercher LLP Barristers and Solicitors, boasts a whole new look, outside and in, and is full of new case law and revised statutes, along with excellent  commentary and practice information. This will also be our pilot project for producing ebook editions of our own publications. We hope you’re as excited about that as we are! We are on schedule for a full launch of the Saskatchewan Builders’ Lien Manual in January 2015. A pre-order form will be sent out to our members starting November 13. Don’t miss out on this snazzy new edition!

Seeking Submissions: Annotated Saskatchewan Statutes

The wildly popular Saskatchewan Builders’ Lien Manual will be the first title in our new Annotated Saskatchewan Statute series by the Law Society Library. We are currently seeking submissions for this series and welcome previously published manuscripts that need some updating, or new manuscripts waiting to be written on important Saskatchewan statutes that will appeal to our membership. For more information or to submit an idea or manuscript, please contact Melanie Hodges Neufeld at 306-569-8020.

The Big Red Binder

For the last couple of years we have been busy keeping up with the new Queen’s Bench Rules of Saskatchewan: Annotated, Fourth Edition (The Big Red Binder), which first came out in October 2013, shortly after the new Rules of Court came into effect. This year we have produced two big releases full of updated statutes and case law dealing with the new rules (June 2014 Release 1 and, most recently, the October 2014 Release 2). The newest release was shipped out on October 20, 2014. For our Regina subscribers, your copies are available for pick-up at the library. If you haven’t picked yours up yet, come on down!

Highlights of the October 2014 Release

  • 350 pages of new and updated content
  • New Saskatchewan case law and legislation current to August 2014
  • Includes all changes to the rules and tariffs to The Saskatchewan Gazette, Vol. 110, No. 31, dated August 1, 2014
  • Price: $120.00 + tax

By now most of our members have the brand-new fourth edition of The Big Red Binder, but in case you missed out, copies are still available ($300.00 + tax)! The 2014 Releases 1 and 2 are sold separately.

The Limitations Manual Online

In February 2014, we brought you the updated and revised Saskatchewan Limitations Manual Online, a public resource that contains an alphabetical list of all statutes with limitation periods, along with relevant case law annotations. This Fall, we have had our best annotators working to update that information to keep our members current. We will begin publishing those updates on our website this November. Check it out!

Case Mail

And if that’s not enough to convince you how swamped we’ve been here in the Library, let me remind you of our semi-monthly publication Case Mail, our online newsletter highlighting recent case digests from all levels of Saskatchewan court.

Phew! With our publishing program in such high gear, you can bet that 2015 is going to be just as filled with great new projects and continuous updates of all our most popular publications.  If you have any comments or suggestions for our publishing program, we’d love to hear from you. Post your comments below or send us an email with your publication wishlist! We’re always looking for new and useful projects to bring to our members!
