The Female View from the Bench 1968 (Throwback Thursday)

March 12, 2015

To wrap up our week-long theme in honour of International Women’s Day, for our Throwback today, we found an article in the Ottawa Citizen, December 4, 1968, featuring two female judges from Saskatchewan Tillie Taylor (1922-2011) and Mary Carter (1923-2010). In “The Female View from the Magistrate’s Bench: We’re Still Putting People in Jail Because They’re Poor”, the two judges charged that in Canada it was as much a crime to be poor as ever it was in Dickens’ England.

Wow – very interesting piece – in 1968 the “female view” = honest, correct, clear-sighted, etc. – thanks for sharing!
