“A Crime on the Bayou” – Learning from Civil Rights Litigators & Activists About Fighting Systemic Racism in the Justice System

November 1, 2022

From ReelTime Creative Learning Experiences

November 18th @ 11 am – 2 pm CST

Qualifies for 3.0 CPD Hours, all of which qualify for Ethics

In 2020, many Law Society of Saskatchewan members attended Just Mercy and Access to Justice: Illuminating Bias, Confronting Systemic Racism, And Doing the Hard Work That Needs to Be Done. To further critical conversations about systemic racism in criminal justice systems, ReelTime Creative Learning Experiences now presents “A Crime on the Bayou”—Learning from Civil Rights Litigators & Activists about Fighting Systemic Racism in the Justice System. “A Crime on the Bayou” is an award-winning documentary and behind-the scenes exploration of two civil rights era arrests in Louisiana that led to landmark constitutional law cases.

Although American in context, this informative program is designed to help lawyers and legal service providers, regardless of location, to:

  • gain better understandings of the persistent injustices that plague judicial systems and the critical importance of pro bono service
  • consider how they can develop the motivation and resilience necessary to fight such injustices
  • draw lessons for navigating issues of bias, discrimination, and systemic racism in justice systems.

Join participants from across North America for this live, interactive event with guests:

  • Gary Duncan, the protagonist of “A Crime on the Bayou” and Civil Rights Leader
  • Armand Derfner, Esq., civil rights attorney, and co-author of “Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court”
  • Lolis Elie, Jr., writer, filmmaker, and son of celebrated civil rights lawyer, Lolis Elis, Sr., who served as the star witness in the Sobol v Perez case featured in “A Crime on the Bayou”
  • Professor LaJuana Davis, Professor of Law and Director of Clinics at Cumberland School of Law and former attorney with Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative of Alabama
  • Valerie A. Jackson, Esq., Deputy Public Defender and Managing Attorney, Office of the Public Defender – State of New Jersey
  • Professor Sean O’Brien, Professor of Law and Clinical Director at University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law
