“Eye-opening”, the cover story of the September issue of Canadian Lawyer magazine, gives a brief history of the Independent Assessment Process (IAP) and the lawyers involved. The IAP “provides compensation to former students for proven sexual abuse, serious physical abuse, and certain other wrongful acts”. As the cover states, “From the beginning, dedicated lawyers have been instrumental in bringing the abuses of the Indian residential school issue into the open and working to help survivors heal”. The article features Regina lawyer, Jeff Scott, discussing his experience representing many of the former Gordon Residential School students. The article also features Eleanor Sunchild from Sunchild Law, whose main office is located on reserve land owned by the Poundmaker Cree Nation and has handled around 1,200 Independent Assessment Process files in the last six years.
