Personal or Non-Legal Matter
The Law Society regulates legal services in the public interest. This generally does not include the purely private activities or disputes of a lawyer or limited licensee. For example:
- family or interpersonal disputes that aren’t related to their practice
- a lawyer or limited licensee suing someone in their personal capacity
It is not necessarily professional misconduct if a person happens to be a lawyer or limited licensee and the person behaves badly in their non-professional life.
However, it may be professional misconduct if their behaviour could harm the reputation of the legal profession. For example, a lawyer or limited licensee attempting to use their position as a legal professional to bully or threaten.
If you believe the lawyer or limited licensee has behaved inappropriately in a private activity, submit a complaint.
