Description :
About the Board
The Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board (the Board) is a respected, independent quasi judicial tribunal with a mandate to adjudicate a broad spectrum of labour relations and workplace disputes. The Board administers, interprets, and applies Saskatchewan’s labour legislation and serves as the appellate authority for adjudicative decisions relating to employment standards and occupational health and safety.
Through its decisions, the Board plays a critical role in shaping labour relations jurisprudence in Saskatchewan and advancing fair, timely, and principled resolution of workplace disputes.
About the Opportunity
The Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board is inviting expressions of interest from qualified lawyers for appointment to the position of Vice Chairperson. This is a part time appointment well suited to experienced practitioners, counsel, or adjudicators seeking to contribute their expertise in a senior adjudicative role while maintaining professional flexibility.
Vice Chairpersons preside over complex and consequential matters involving employers, trade unions, and employees. They conduct quasi judicial hearings as single adjudicators and as members or chairs of representative panels. Proceedings may include viva voce hearings or in camera adjudication based on written records.
In this role, Vice Chairpersons:
• Provide leadership during hearings, ensuring a fair, impartial, and procedurally sound process;
• Guide panel members in the interpretation and application of labour and administrative law;
• Author clear, well reasoned, and precedential written decisions; and
• Conduct pre hearing conferences to clarify issues, manage proceedings efficiently, and where appropriate, facilitate resolution through dispute resolution or mediation techniques.
Parties appearing before the Board may be represented by legal counsel or may be self represented, requiring Vice Chairpersons to exercise strong adjudicative judgment, fairness, and clarity in decision making.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must be members in good standing of a Canadian law society and should have:
• A recognized law degree with substantial knowledge of labour law and administrative law;
• Significant litigation experience, preferably in labour or employment matters, including appearances before administrative tribunals, arbitral bodies, or the courts;
• Experience with, or a strong aptitude for, adjudication, decision writing, and procedural fairness;
• Knowledge of mediation, conciliation, or dispute resolution practices;
• Excellent oral communication skills, including active listening and the ability to engage effectively with diverse parties;
• Exceptional legal writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and analytically rigorous decisions; and
• Professional independence, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple files while meeting adjudicative timelines.
Terms of Appointment
This is a part time appointment made by Order in Council for a five year term, serving at pleasure. Compensation is established by Order in Council.
