The Law Society regulates the legal profession to effectively mitigate against the risk of the misuse of legal services for illicit purposes, including money laundering and terrorist financing. A new administrative penalty structure has been adopted to address issues relating to several trust safety, financial reporting and accountability rules.
The administrative penalty structure streamlines and enhances existing processes to address certain breaches of the Law Society of Saskatchewan Rules that play a key role in establishing standards of financial responsibility. Integration of an administrative penalty program supports the important responsibility the Law Society has to mitigate money laundering and terrorist financing efforts, by requiring lawyers to know their clients, identify red flags and manage potential risks involved with suspicious transactions and by imposing appropriate and proportionate sanctions if breached.
This recorded webinar was created to inform members of the new administrative penalty structure, discuss the rules affected by the new penalty and ways for law firms to ensure compliance with those rules.
