In these two sessions from our seminar, Essentials for Boutique Practitioners, Law Society Society staff members, Valerie Payne and Pam Harmon review the Code of Professional Conduct and Trust Accounting for solos and small firms. In Ethics and the Code, Valerie Payne, Director of Professional Responsibility for the Law Society, discusses ethics issues in the Code of Professional Conduct specific to sole practitioners, concerns and issues that arise often in relation to sole practitioners, and shares supports available through the Law Society. In Trust Accounting, Pam Harmon, Director of Finance and CFO for the Law Society, discusses the main accounting rules, provides an overview of how money should flow through the firm, lists methods approved for accepting and paying out trust funds, highlights recent updates, reviews red flags for fraud attempts, and provides tips & tricks to avoid common issues.
