The Counsel for Children in Child Protection Proceedings program was implemented in Fall 2014 subject to proclamation of amendments to The Public Guardian and Trustee Act and The Court of Queen’s Bench Act passed in Spring 2014. This is new program that relies on a roster of lawyers to deliver services to ensure the voices of children and youth are heard in protection proceedings.

Throughout this seminar you will learn practice methods and processes of how to deliver services in child protection proceedings, including mediation, where the court makes an order for counsel or the program, and upon referral, the program assesses that the criteria for child representation as set out in the legislation is met. This seminar will outline the operational policies guiding the program and discuss the roles and responsibilities of those involved in child protection proceedings. You will also learn techniques of how to communicate with children and how to assess child capacity. You will participate in scenario discussion that will support skill development, and learn critical tips for lawyers on the front line.
