Frank H. Wu, a law professor at University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, will present on cultural competence and cultural diversity, as a means to promote cooperation in the workplace and our law practice. Using social science, personal stories, provocative examples, and a bit of humor, he will offer insights on changing demographics, different norms, and implicit bias. He will inspire leaders to be thoughtful about these difficult issues which have become increasingly common.

The latest social science research suggests that in addition to explicit forms of racial discrimination, there are subtle yet significant forms of bias. “Stereotype threat” also burdens racial minorities with representing a race, influencings their performance with the internalized consequences of negative images. Using stories, data, and humor, Professor Wu challenges the Bench and the Bar to reflect on how to live up to our shared ideals of a diverse democracy.
