New AI generated subject classification for Saskatchewan case law is live!

We are happy to report that a new artificial intelligence generated classification has been rolled out for Saskatchewan case law. You can see the new classification terms here under the italicized keywords that continue to be available for all cases on CanLII.
This project used state-of-the-industry machine learning techniques to automatically generate case law classification by practice area for decisions from the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, Queen’s Bench, and Provincial Court. It has been applied to the cases that are published on CanLII.org now and into the future.
We would like to thank the Law Foundation of Saskatchewan for the grant that allowed us to complete this project. We also want to thank the Law Society of Saskatchewan Legal Resources Library for allowing us to use the classification terms in their digests database as training data (the digests database contents are also available on CanLII Connects). As ever, we are grateful to the people at Lexum who have put so much expertise and passion into implementing this new functionality.
This project is the latest machine learning initiative carried out at CanLII and Lexum, and we plan for more in the future. Over time we will expand this functionality to more jurisdictions across Canada.
