Bridging the legal publishing past to the legal technology future as the Law Society of Saskatchewan opens vLex to its members

April 9, 2018

Unquestionably the provincial law society that provides members with the most comprehensive presentation of its home case law, the Law Society of Saskatchewan goes even further with the addition of vLex Canada to its roster. To the depth of CanLII, the breadth of WestLaw Next, Saskatchewan lawyers now gain the richness of the original Maritime Law Book Key Number System and detailed topical annotations that made the Saskatchewan Reports a treasured resource for decades, now solely available through vLex Canada and the Iceberg AI platform.

“We are excited and grateful for the chance to support the Saskatchewan legal community through this partnership with one of North America’s most innovative Law Societies.” said Compass / vLex Canada CEO, Colin Lachance. “Together we’re presenting the only place a lawyer can explore the Saskatchewan Case Law Digests, the full text of all cases, news sources from Mondaq and Slaw, and a selection of the Irwin Essentials of Canada Law series – all in a single search!”

With the addition of vLex Canada to the Library Resources of its member section, the Law Society of Saskatchewan creates a new path to understanding the law. vLex Canada extends the topic-based case law browsing and search using the MLB Key Number System (across over 100 topics and tens of thousands of sub-topics) for pre-2017 from the MLB to new cases using artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning techniques. Through these same methods, developed on vLex’s advanced Iceberg AI platform, vLex uncovers and recommends similar cases not captured by citation relationships or editorial tagging. Add in highly personalized tools, including a first-of-its-kind personal research graph, and Saskatchewan lawyers will find their use of this advanced and ultra-modern platform grows the value of the resource with every session!

“As technology change accelerates, it’s important to us to find new ways of supporting our members’ legal research needs,” said Melanie Hodges Neufeld, Director of Legal Resources. “We’re very pleased to have partners like vLex who combine the strengths that comes from competing at the leading edge of legal tech with a hyper-local focus on the unique needs of the Saskatchewan legal community.”

Building on the detailed Saskatchewan Case Law Digests, vLex Canada plans to expand the services it delivers in the province through developing legal analytics and specialized services for the Saskatchewan market.
