June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. As noted on the National Indigenous History Month website, this is “a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.” One way to participate is by attending local events and here are activities taking place across the province:
You can also visit the Office of the Treaty Commissioner website for events taking place throughout the year.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Resources and Activities
In response to the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Law Society began offering webinars, workshops, and training in 2017. Many free recordings are available in our recorded versions shop. If you would like assistance, you can contact the CPD department or chat with one of our legal research librarians in Legal Resources.
This month we are focusing on the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). On June 21, 2021, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act received Royal Assent and came into force. The Act requires the federal government to ensure that the laws of Canada are consistent with UNDRIP and affirms UNDRIP as an important source for interpreting Canadian law.
On June 21st the Law Society is hosting a free webinar on the impact and implications of UNDRIP on resource development. Register here for the webinar: UNDRIP in the Context of Resource Development.
