Free Legal Resource Fair to kickoff Access to Justice week

October 18, 2019
The Legal Resource Fair in Saskatoon during Access to Justice Week 2017.

Access to justice has become a major issue in Canada as legal services have become increasingly unaffordable for many citizens. Over their lifetime, most Canadians will experience some legal problems whether due to divorce, the workplace, owning a small business, or dealing with a family member’s estate. Due to the costs of professional legal advice, many Canadians will try to navigate the legal system on their own without adequate information and often unaware of the different support agencies and organizations available.

Saskatoon Public Library’s (SPL) mission includes providing free and open access to resources as well as providing community spaces where people and ideas meet. Through the Legal Resource Fair, we can help meet the legal needs of Saskatoon citizens with the tradeshow of service providers, a free workshop on the role libraries can play in helping people access legal information, and a walk-in family law information clinic.

Tradeshow:

Location:  Main Level, Frances Morrison Branch

Time:  1:30 – 5:00 pm, Sunday, Oct. 20

One of the main attractions of the Legal Resource Fair is the tradeshow which gives Saskatchewan non-profit, government and community organizations providing legal resources the opportunity to connect and share information with Saskatoon library users. Previous participants include Pro Bono Law Society, Family Matters, Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan, Office of Residential Tenancies, etc.

Legal Presenters

During the tradeshow, SPL will be hosting guest speakers on the following subjects:

1:30 Court Processes – Pro Bono Students Canada

2:00 Mediation – Charmaine Panko

2:30 Arbitration – Kelly Shaw

3:00 Legal Research – Ken Fox and Alan Kirkpatrick

3:30 Child Support Recalculation – Tina Halbeck

4:00 Unbundled legal services/legal coaching services – Lisa Eisen

Walk-in Family Law Information Clinic

As part of the Free Legal Resource Day, a free legal information clinic is hosted by the Ministry of Justice, Pro Bono Saskatchewan volunteer lawyers, Pro Bono Students Canada, and the Public Legal Education Association (PLEA) at Saskatoon Public Library, Frances Morrison Branch.  The clinic will provide an opportunity for individuals with family law issues to meet with a volunteer lawyer and/or law student for up to 30 minutes to ask questions about family law relevant to their situation. The information clinic will run from 2:00 – 4:00 in the lower level of the Frances Morrison Branch.
