The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of the legal profession especially the admission of new lawyers. Several U.S. states and Canadian provinces are grappling with how to accommodate for remote testing so that law school graduates can be admitted to practice law. Instead of a bar exam, this year the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) launched the new Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP). This program that helps recent law school graduates gain the practical legal knowledge and competencies in lawyer skills, practice management, professional ethics, as well as the personal attributes needed to successfully practice law in Canada. Law school graduates from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Nova Scotia will complete the PREP program and complete articles to be admitted to practice law. We spoke with Dr. Kara Mitchelmore, CEO of CPLED, on the future of legal education in Canada and getting the next generation of lawyers ready for legal practice.
