Pro Bono Stories – Part 3
October 27, 2021Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan (PBLS) is celebrating Access to Justice Week by sharing stories from our volunteers. PBLS volunteers directly support low-income people in Saskatchewan who would otherwise not be able to access a lawyer.

One of the best experiences I had was assisting a client at the Small Claims Clinic. This client had lent a significant amount of money to an individual and was unsure how to proceed with getting it back. Their limitation period was coming up, and thus timing was important. After explaining the process to them, I helped them draft a demand letter and claim, and instructed them how to deal with both. After giving all the advice I could and helping them with their documents, I sent them on their way and informed them they could book another appointment after serving both if they needed more help.
The demand letter ended up being so successful that the individual was paid in full within a week. The individual was so happy he took the time to track me down in my private practice and give me a call to express his gratitude and happiness with how things unfolded.
To date, it is one of the few times I have ever had a client thank me, and I am happy the Clinic was able to materially change this individual’s financial situation with less than an hour of work. This is one of the best examples I have with respect to the importance of pro-bono work and the power we have as lawyers to help people navigate the system.
