International Human Rights Day

December 10, 2024

The Law Society of Saskatchewan joins the global community in observing Human Rights Day on December 10, with the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” As noted by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, “human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good.”

The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission offers local information and resources on human rights.

The Law Society recognizes the importance of human rights and respect for human rights is codified in Chapter 6 of the Law Society of Saskatchewan Code of Professional Conduct which notes that lawyers have “a special responsibility to respect and uphold the principles and requirements of human rights.”

The Law Society provides continuing professional development activities that focus on human rights including several webinars:

  • Recent Jurisprudence Respecting Police Interrogation and the Charter
  • Trends and Developments in Human Rights
  • A closer look at the impact and scope of The Accessible Saskatchewan Act

Additional webinars can be found in the Recorded Versions Shop.

The Law Society’s Legal Resource Library also provides resources:

  • The Charter of Rights and Freedoms / 2021 (print text and Member Resource Section eBook)
  • Fundamental Justice: Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms / 2019 (print text and Member Resource Section eBook)
  • Halsbury’s Laws of Canada: Discrimination and Human Rights / 2022 (print text)
  • The Law of Human Rights in Canada: Practice and Procedure / 2022 (print text)
  • Mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence: From Legal Custom to Lawful Concern / 2023 (print text)
