Law Society of Saskatchewan News Public Concerns Pathway is Now Available

Public Concerns Pathway is Now Available

The Law Society of Saskatchewan has developed a Public Concerns Pathway to expand the public’s understanding of the roles, responsibilities and obligations of legal professionals, as well as awareness of the appropriate options for addressing concerns about legal professionals.  

The Public Concerns Pathway is a plain-language information and self-help tool that provides members of the public with clear information about what they may expect from legal professionals and the Law Society. By offering guidance on common areas of concern, the Public Concerns Pathway enhances delivery of services and promotes access to justice by providing the public with information to ensure their concerns are addressed by the appropriate process or organization, and this also allows effective and timely review of complaint matters that are within the Law Society’s jurisdiction.  

How the Public Concerns Pathway Works 

The Public Concerns Pathway asks users simple questions and provides customized information and options, based on the answers provided. There are pathways on the most common concerns raised about legal professionals and practical tools are provided throughout. Members of the public are encouraged to utilize the Public Concern Pathway before submitting a complaint to the Law Society, so they can better understand the responsibilities of legal professionals and the most appropriate way to resolve their concerns. 

Increasing Understanding 

The Public Concerns Pathway helps to strengthen the public’s understanding and awareness of the appropriate avenues and options for addressing concerns about legal professionals.  

The Law Society often receives inquiries or complaints from members of the public that relate to issues that are not within the Law Society’s jurisdiction to address. This can lead to delays and frustrations in the proper assessment of a concern or complaint by the public. The Public Concerns Pathway is designed to assist members of the public determine whether the Law Society complaints process is the appropriate path for them. If it is not, resources and assistance options are provided to help address their concern. 

In the Public Interest 

The Public Concerns Pathway serves the public interest as it assists the public with: 

  • understanding the varied roles and responsibilities of different legal and law-related professionals and organizations;  
  • navigating and understanding the scope and role of the Law Society of Saskatchewan; and  
  • legal information and guidance, if the Law Society of Saskatchewan is not the most appropriate avenue for their concerns. 

The Public Concerns Pathway helps the public take informed steps to resolve an issue with a legal professional or law-related organization by providing guidance on: 

  • the appropriate avenues for concerns relating to individuals or organizations that are outside of the Law Society’s jurisdiction (e.g., the judiciary, police);   
  • the appropriate avenues for issues that are outside the Law Society’s jurisdiction (e.g., fee assessment, Human Rights complaint);   
  • how to proactively resolve concerns with a legal professional in appropriate circumstances (e.g., if they feel more communication with their lawyer or limited licensee is required); and  
  • filing a complaint against a legal professional if their concern is appropriately within the jurisdiction of the Law Society’s complaints process.
