National Volunteer Week – Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City Inc. (CLASSIC) Volunteers

May 1, 2025

National Volunteer Week is celebrated from April 27 to May 3 in 2025 to highlight the power, impact and importance of individual and collective volunteer efforts across Canada. Thanks are extended to the many volunteers in the legal profession who volunteer their time and expertise to support continuing professional development and pro bono legal services.

CLASSIC provides free legal programming, services, and supports for people who experience poverty and injustice as well as clinical legal education in Saskatoon. CLASSIC extends thanks to the volunteers who helped deliver legal education and services in 2024.

Board of Directors: Blaine Beaven (Chair), Jan King (Vice Chair), Tyson Acoose (Secretary), Stephen Yee (Treasurer), Mark Galambos, Lana Garcelon, Amelia Lowe-Muller, Chelsea Roy, Natasha Steinback, Penny Yeager

Legal Advice Clinic: Jonathan Adams, Davida Bentham, Nicole Bree, Curtis Clavelle, Mark Galambos, Gillian Gough, Chris Gratton, Deb Hopkins, Michael MacDonald, Michelle MacDonald, Don McIvor, Kimbal McMillian, Melissa Nicolls, Taylor-Anne Yee, Terry Zakreski

Pro Bono Students Canada: Frank Chou (Project Lead), Masooda Bidar, Tone Hagen, Jaylyn Kim, Oliver Munn, Favor Osazee

Retired Volunteer: Renee Gavigan

Retired Lawyer Volunteers: Janice Gingell and Pat Tondevold

Special Recognition: CLASSIC highlights special recognition for Janice Gingell who officially “retired” from being a retired lawyer volunteer in February 2025. Janice volunteered 20 hours per week at CLASSIC for 13 years. During that time, she provided CLASSIC with over 11,000 hours of pro bono service. She assisted on hundreds of files and made a significant impact as the only lawyer at CLASSIC who provided estate, power of attorney, wills and guardianship work. She then provided training to others to help with this growing area of demand. Janice was also integral in advocating for the Active Pro Bono registration category through the Law Society of Saskatchewan. As expressed by CLASSIC staff, “Janice is an incredible inspiration and impacted many people through her volunteer work at CLASSIC. She is intelligent, hard-working, humble and witty. We miss her already but wish her all the best in actual retirement”.
